The Why?

Shortly after having children, we watched the documentary Food, Inc. The film opened our eyes to the disturbing problems in the commercial food industry that were afflicting our health and environment. It led us to discover that there was a better way to provide meat for our family. (Read our homesteading story here.) We now have the ability to provide meat for our family plus some surplus. There are many more local homesteaders and potential farmers with the ability to produce and share that would do so if the food system served the small farmer and the consumer that desires their products. Regional Seasonal started from the premise that farmers cannot effectively both farm, sell and deliver their surplus products. We truly believe that the combination of rotational grazing, supplementation with non-GMO feed and a true concern for the animals well-being is what makes our meat taste so good. We started Regional Seasonal to help farmers who share these beliefs get their products to consumers who appreciate them.

The time, cost and effort needed for a small farmer to bring his products to market on his own, especially meat, is grossly inefficient. This has lead to the existence of less small farmers and the consumer missing out on great local meat. Instead, the only option ends up being a package of meat from the grocery store with a cute, but fake, farm picture, labeled “Farm Raised” and from an animal fed GMO grains and raised inside a factory or feed lot. Regional Seasonal is on a mission to keep you from having to eat that kind of meat, to put more money in the pockets of local farmers and induce more folks to start farming. We want your family to eat like ours. The highest quality food in season and from our region. This means our products will vary based on current availability but it will always come from a small farm in our area that meets our high standards developed by Casey Lane of Food Freedom Farm Shares. Quality is more important to us than quantity and if we cannot provide a product that meets our high standards, we will just go with out.

Every Regional Seasonal participating farm takes pride in how they care for their livestock as well as what they feed them. We welcome you to see and know where your food comes from.
Thank You!

What we Believe

Food Freedom Approved means that the food was produced under conditions which respect:

  • The lives of all creatures.
  • The ecology of our region.
  • The soils on our farms
  • The nutrition we all provide our families.
  • Flavor and culinary tradition.
  • A sustainable market for homestead farms.

We believe that a network of small agrarian farms and the families that support and depend upon them for sustenance is the best safeguard of the values of liberty and family. Rebuilding this traditional American structure is necessary for the prosperity of our nation and the health and happiness of our families.

“Why not just be certified organic?” Organic, a term commonly known to mean food produced without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, has become a government controlled term. We are not impressed with the government standards. We believe we can do better. We promise to allow farm visitors and pictures. We promise to provide living conditions and quality diets for livestock that are most like the natural habitat of their species. We promise to treat livestock as individual creatures. We want a relationship and to know the actual practices of the farms from where we buy our feeds. And, if that isn't possible, to actually test feeds for pesticides and genetic modification.

Our Standards

These are the standards by which we judge ourselves and other partner farms:

  • We will never promote the growth of our livestock by providing antibiotics, hormones or steroids. We actually want livestock that grows slower and develops more taste, nutrition and robust health from their natural diets and ability to follow their rotational grazing instincts. We have no interest in speeding that process up artificially.

  • We will not grow any genetically modified crops and strive to not feed any to our livestock for meat, dairy or eggs. If we offer meat from animals that were raised using feeds that possibly contained genetically modified crops, the product will be labeled as such.
  • We will not grow any crops or treat our land using synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.

  • Respect, peace and lack of suffering are our priorities for livestock slaughter. We farm at a small enough scale that we view livestock as individuals not dollars.
